There’s nothing more satisfying than preparing home cooked meals in a beautifully renovated kitchen that’s not only outfitted with all the latest mod cons and designed with your convenience in mind but is utterly gorgeous to behold. Still, the prospect of completely renovating such an integral part of the home is a serious project, the scope of which may be daunting to many.
For your peace of mind, we’ve prepared a list of 14 burning questions that you wanted to know about kitchen renovation… But might have been too afraid to ask…
How long does it take?
It depends on the size of the project. Usually the collaboration on the design process, where we work together to design your dream kitchen takes 2-3 weeks. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for the materials to be ordered and delivered, 1 week to remove / demolish old materials, and 4-6 weeks for installation and finishing touches.
What if I’m not sure what I want?
Some customers come to us with a specific idea of the kitchen of their dreams, but a great many have only a few vague ideas. In either case, our design team will work tirelessly with you to determine the perfect kitchen for your personal tastes.
What’s the “kitchen work triangle” and how does it impact the design process?
This refers to the distance between your fridge, your cooker and your kitchen sink. Ensuring an easy flow between these 3 stations is integral to the design process.
What’s the best kind of flooring to install?
It depends entirely on your tastes and budget. Hardwood can look great in kitchens but standing water can cause issues if left unattended. Floor tiles can look amazing but can be cracked or chipped in exceptional circumstances. Linoleum is great for those on a budget but can cheapen the overall effect. It depends where your priorities lie!
Am I better off with quartz or granite countertops?
Both are fine choices, although quartz countertops are sealed making them more durable and completely non-porous. This makes them virtually zero maintenance.
Can a gas stove be added to an all electric home?
Some customers find that nothing quite beats cooking with gas. If your home is all electric, however, the most efficient solution is to run your stove on calor or propane gas which is stored in an external tank.
Can I reuse my existing cabinets?
Yes, absolutely! While many customers like a brand new exterior, keeping your existing cabinets can reduce your cost and lead times.
Do all of my new cabinets have to be in the same style / material/ colour?
We recognise that some people like to create contrasts in the kitchen, and who are we to argue otherwise? However, contrasting cabinets may incur additional costs / lead times.
Should my kitchen have an island?
If you want a kitchen island, absolutely it should. We would only say that islands have their caveats. They can make small spaces look even smaller and because they draw the eye they need to be kept immaculate at all times. If they look messy, the kitchen looks messy.
Does my cooker need to have a hood?
It’s not a legal requirement, but it is in your best interests. The hood extracts food odours as well as moisture from the cooking process. This helps to keep your kitchen fresh and clean.
Can I install dimmer lights in my new kitchen?
Absolutely! Whether you need complete visibility while you cook or you want to create a romantic ambience, it benefits a kitchen to have adjustable light and we’d be more than happy to dazzle you with a range of adjustable lighting solutions.
Will the renovation add value to my home?
Certainly. While there are many factors that go into exactly how much, on average a new kitchen will add around 5.8% to the value of your home.
What if something goes wrong with my installation?
No problem at all! We operate a 24 hour Emergency Response Service for your peace of mind. However, since we’re Gas Safe registered, you have the additional peace of mind that comes with knowing that a mishap is extremely unlikely.
